OK, So I'm not going to win MOTHER OF THE YEAR.....

....but no one told me about this. There was no warning or "word of advice" from anyone. This was something I had to figure out on my own.

Let me take you back in time to about 2 weeks ago.

Quinn's teacher at daycare had mentioned that he seemed to be stumbling more often and wanted to let me know. This made me wonder if he was getting a new ear infection. Since we were planning to go to my sister-in-law's house, I rushed Quinn to the doctor for a quick ear check. Luckily, the ears were clear, and we had a fun weekend at Kristel's house (post and pics to come later).

Yet Quinn continued to stumble. At school last Monday, he tripped and hit his forehead on the little table. At school on Tuesday, he tripped and hit his forehead again (in the EXACT SAME SPOT) on something else. Wednesday was a good day. At school on Thursday, he tripped and hit his head on the edge of the changing table (ON THE EXACT SAME SPOT!!) Only this time he not only sported a big, ugly, blue bruise, but he also had a big knot sticking off his head. They had called me at work to warn me, but that still didn't stop the tears from flowing when I saw my baby boy with this big puffy knot on his sweet little face. I kid you not, this knot was the diameter of a quarter and stuck off his head probably a quarter of an inch, and bluish-purple in the center.

At this point, I decided I had to figure out what was causing Quinn to trip. I decided to go to Stride Rite to get his feet measured. I was bound and determined not to buy shoes there because I think they are ridiculously overpriced (no offense to anyone who buys their kids' shoes there). The plan was to go there to get a good measurement, and then find some bargain shoes at a cheaper store. The girl that measured his foot told Quinn what a big boy he was because his foot was a size 5!

WHAT????!!!???!

A Size 5????? (He's been wearing size 4s since Christmas)....

Oops. Apparently my boy has been tripping around wearing too small shoes for at least 2 weeks now.

Quinn had to deal with 2 weeks of torture because his Momma was too dense to realize he might need new shoes.

How was I supposed to know? When the pants turn into high-waters, I buy him new pants. When the long sleeve shirts end up as 3/4 sleeves, I get him new shirts. What's the magic symbol to tell me when the shoes get too small??

Could it have perhaps been the fact that for the past 2 weeks he has cried when I tried to put his shoes on? Or wiggling his toes when I pull the shoes off at the end of the day?

So we went to Target on Saturday and bought Quinn some new size 5 shoes, complete with Velcro straps that he has already figured out how to undo.

Now I want all you seasoned moms to answer me this....(and by seasoned, I mean any mother who's child is older than Quinn, who is officially 1 year 2 months and 15 days.)

What was the one parenting thing that no one told you about, yet you discovered the hard way?

If I can admit my big mistake....so can you.....

Hee hee hee...as soon as I read that he was tripping, I thought, "He needs new shoes!"

I did the same thing when Peter was little. You are not alone!

But ever since then, I've done EVERYTHING else right! :)

I would consider myself a "seasoned" mom and I have never heard of this. I always just pressed on the toes and when it seemed tight I got them new shoes. It is hard when they are growing leaps and bounds. Now you have helped others to learn something.

I personally think you are a great mom. Keep up the good work.

Kimberly, you are doing a great job! This Mommy thing has a huge learning curve as I have found out.

The night before Claire came home I broke down crying and had to admit I did not know how to make a bottle. It was my birthday and several friends were here helping me celebrate so they jumped right in and made bottles up for me and taught me what to do.

I have just learned to ask questions all the time but I have also learned that kids are pretty resilient.

Ohhhhh Kimberly, there are sooo many things I learned the hard way...I will have to think very hard to choose the best one. Hang in there sweetie, you are doing great!

I didn't know that tripping a lot meant they needed new shoes! Learn something new every day.

Something I was not prepared for was the fact that your children can make you more angry than anybody else. It is because you love them so much and want the best for them, and yet they fight you. At least, mine do, and that is because of another thing called a STRONG WILL. I thought I would have sweet, well-behaved children, but was I ever in for a shock!

You won't see me pointing any fingers...seeing I just locked my 2 year old in a running car. I know I'm not going to win Mother of the Year. I think the lesson I have learned all the way around is that I don't know everything, and for every time I say my children wouldn't ever do that, they do it x's 10. I've eaten many words.

At least you are learning. Rebecca was 8 and I still hadn't learned my lesson. She had the cutest pair of brown clogs with a wooden heel.(She wore them to church and sometimes to school) For about a month she limped on and off until I realized that she only limped when she wore those shoes. You would think the redness on her big toes would have been a clue too, but for some reason it didn't click with me. I guess I was in denial that she had outgrown the cutest pair of shoes she had ever owned.

I have learned that teeth do not only come out, but they also go UP! I had no idea that a tooth could be knocked up in gums...no idea!

Shoes...well with Alex it's easy, if she complains about her feet, it's time for new shoes, Tanner is a different story. I noticed the stitching coming undone (2 wks ago) and felt his toe - honestly I don't see how it wasn't coming out of his shoe. The poor boy NEVER would have told me!!
